itSMF Singapore Newsletter ? September 2013

From the Editor?s Desk

itSMF would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Teachers a HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY.

A bit Teachers' Day significance in Singapore:

In many countries, Teachers' Days (or Teachers Day) are intended to be special days for the appreciation of teachers, and may include celebrations to honour them for their special contributions in a particular field area, or the community in general. The date on which Teachers' day is celebrated varies from country to country. Teachers' days are distinct from World Teachers' Day which is officially celebrated across the world on October 5.

An official school holiday. Celebrations are normally conducted the day before, where students usually get half a day off. In some schools, students will put on performances to entertain and honour their teachers.

Thank you for your continued support to the Chapter, which has helped us to bring many professional, social and networking events to chapter members in Singapore.

We welcome any suggestion / feedback that will help us improve on our program of activities and in meeting your interest.

See you at your next event
Have a nice week ahead.

Regards,
Executive CommitteeitSMF Singapore Chapter

Synopsis:

It is almost impossible to have a complete in-house IT environment these days.  Vendor management has become more crucial in today?s IT management than ever before. In the end what matters is a win-win situation for both the customer and the supplier.  When there is a win-win situation, a long lasting positive relationship is generated between the supplier and the user.  The foundation for a long lasting relationship is the agreement or the contract.  Hank Levine from Washington D.C., partner of Levine, Blaszak, Block, and Boothbly (LB3), and Ben Fox from London, Managing Director of TechCaliber Consulting (TC2), will be in Singapore to share their experiences in procurement in general and contract negotiations in particular.  Both Hank and Ben have helped numerous organisations negotiate effective procurement deals.  In order to make the session more interactive, the format for this topic will be a panel discussion.  Sreeni Katta, who is an experienced ITIL Expert, will be moderating the session to draw up on the real life experiences of the esteemed panel comprising of Hank and Ben.  The audience are encouraged to come to the session with related questions with respective to their own situation to seek answers from the panel in order to gain maximum benefit.

International Chapter Updates

itSMFI is please to reconfirm your invitation to attend our Chapter Leadership Conference on 6-7 October.

Details on the agenda are attached to this email.

Kindly book NOW to attend the itSMF Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC). It is absolutely critical to attend this event.

Given the current fundamental developments in the itSMF and ITSM world (our engagement with Axelos and the impending restructure of the International Executive Board and itSMF as an international organization), this year's event will even be more crucial.

Some quotes below indicate how well past CLC events were perceived by participants.

"...the single most valuable event for the future of itSMF."

"... a long overdue event which covered many critical areas necessary for the establishment and running of Chapters."

"... the best itSMF Chapter event this year!"

The Chapter Leadership Conference (CLC) is an annual itSMF event where Chapters Leaders and International Executive Board meet to discuss future plans, define strategic directions, share, learn and network. CLC is organized one day before AGM so chapters can prepare motions that will be discussed between them and voted on at the AGM.

The event is structured around key topics of the ITSM market and different sessions are led by the industry expert. It is critical for Chapter Leaders to attend in order to

·           Share, obtain, refine and debate ideas and initiatives in support of their chapters,

·           Obtain in depth input on global as well as other chapter initiatives & frameworks.

The 2013 CLC and AGM will focus on:

·           Axelos engagement,

·           The itSMFI and IEB role going forward and restructuring towards the envisaged role,

·           New chapter agreement that will help govern the global itSMF organization.

CLC 2013 will comprise different types of sessions to ensure that the meeting is interactive, relevant and productive. Plenary sessions, round table, workshops and group discussions are included.

We are looking forward to welcome you at the upcoming CLC.

Best Regards,
Harold Petersen

ISO 27001:2005 - 10 Lessons Learnt from the Journey!

-Suresh GP, EC, itSMF Singapore Chapter

I have had my share of consulting/implementing and auditing experience on a few of the ISO standards and to me ISO27001 has been the most difficult and significant learning experience.

As I talk about the information security standard ISO27001:2005, the 2013 version is due sometime later, but the final draft suggests it is going to remain pretty much intact with easy integration with other management standards.

Here are my 10 lessons learnt during my journey towards driving ISO27001 certification at various organizations worldwide ----Read More
